Lycée des Jeunes Filles

Location: Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Year: 2014
Client: Islamic Relief Haiti
Type: Educational Facility

Lycée des Jeunes Filles was founded in 1943 and is Haiti’s most successful all-girls public school. The school’s campus was severely damaged during the 2010 earthquake.

Studio Drum Collaborative was tasked with rehabilitating and providing additional teaching spaces and a library to the main building. In addition to increasing the number of classrooms within the school, the leading design concept behind Lycée des Jeunes Filles’ rehabilitation is to recreate the spatial experience of the building’s main lobby, a memorable room with checkered red and white floor tiles. Smaller common spaces throughout the building will echo the architectural elements found in the main lobby, thus enhancing the school’s visual identity.
